Tissue Engineering Laboratories

The Tissue Engineering Laboratories at the Boston Campus
of the VA Boston Healthcare System

(all in Building 1A, the Research Building ) include the following:

a) A fully equipped histology laboratory (400 sq. ft; Room 108) with bench space for selected biochemical assays. The following recently-purchased histology apparatus is in operation: Thermo Shandon tissue processor, Thermo Shandon paraffin embedding station, Thermo Shandon microtome, DakoCytologix automatic stainer, and Thermo Shandon manual staining apparatus. The Histology Laboratory also contains a slide warmer with LED display, manual staining set for routine and special stains, a vacuum oven, a light microscope for slide quality control, a freezer, a refrigerator and small freezer for radioactive samples. There are 2 desks in the lab.

b) A wet 250 sq. ft. wet laboratory (Rm. 110) in which selected biochemical assays and RNA extraction are performed.

c) Olympus light microscope with digital camera interface with an eMac computer;

d) Two tissue culture suites (135 sq. ft. each; Rooms 201 and 301) with 4 sterile hoods and 6 incubators.

e) Access to cell and molecular biology laboratories (Rooms 319 and 118) containing a scintillation counter, fluorometer, and other apparatus necessary for a wide array of biochemical assays.

f) Access to an animal facility that is outfitted with all of the equipment necessary to perform sterile, survival surgery on large (dogs, goats, and sheep) as well as small animals.

The offices of the Tissue Engineering Laboratories occupy more than 1,500 sq. ft. of space adjacent to the laboratory building with separate offices for graduate students, fellows, and 3 faculty/principal investigators.
